=== Vacation in Lübeck ===
The Hanseatic city of Lübeck is among the best-loved vacation destinations in North Germany. Anyone who rents a vacation flat in Lübeck can see a wealth of art treasures and profit from the proximity to Baltic Sea beaches. Lübeck was founded in 1143 and flourished as a medieval Hanseatic city. Visitors in Lübeck will not be able to overlook the Holstentor (Holsten Gate). Lübeck‘s landmark stands at the western entrance to the Old Town. The double-towered city gate, completed in 1478, houses a museum of city history. The surrounding gabled buildings stem from the 16th to 18th centuries and were once used to store salt.
Lübeck‘s atmospheric center is the marketplace, which is dominated by the City Hall (Rathaus). Construction of the L-shaped building with its impressive facade began in the 13th century. From a vacation home in Lübeck, vacationers can walk to the Marienkirche (St. Mary’s Church) in a few minutes. The red-brick Gothic building possesses, with a famous altar and a sacrament chest, many valuable treasures. Anyone who stays in a Lübeck vacation home will also be able to see the “Buddenbrook house.” This patrician house once belonged to Thomas Mann’s family. It was destroyed during the war. Only the facade remains, attached to a post-war commercial building. The famous author gave Lübeck a literary monument in his family saga Buddenbrooks. Lübeck Cathedral was rebuilt after destruction during the war. A former monastic building houses the Museum for Art and Cultural History.
